Whether users are on a high-speed connection or a low-baud rate dial-up modem, everyone on the Internet expects speed. Furthermore, recent studies show that if your webpage hasn’t loaded within eight (8) seconds of a request, your users likely won’t stick around. Whether your site is down or too much content is loading doesn’t matter to the average user, if they can’t access your information within seconds, they’ll find it elsewhere. To account for various modem and transfer speeds, see the comparison chart below of typical load times.

Web Page Sizes

Over 65% of US online users are on a dial-up connection every day. Although this number is dropping steadily and switching over to high-speed Internet, a clear majority of users will be accessing the Internet through traditional phone lines. As such, web designers need to ensure that web pages can load rapidly regardless of connection type. Although there is no real tangible means to measure what is acceptable for file size, anywhere between 30-40 kb (including all images, content and other media elements) is a suitable target size. This range covers a majority of dial-up users and all high-speed connections in a reasonable time frame, under 8 seconds.

Speeding Up Load Time

If your webpages are taking too long to load, try some of the following suggestions to cut load time.

Cut out unnecessary HTML such as comments, font changes, and table elements that are not needed

Use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control appearance rather than changing fonts and appearance on every page

Define the dimensions of every image you use; this way the browser can continue displaying content even if the image hasn’t loaded yet

Reduce image file sizes

Split content into more pages

Overview: Cut out unnecessary colors, shades and other data from your GIF/JPEG’s to create lightweight images.

Probably the easiest way to cut wait time and bandwidth costs is to simply decrease file size of your web pages. The easiest way to accomplish this is to trim out excess components from your images. This tip presents to users how to filter out unnecessary colors, compression, and a comparison between GIF vs. JPEG files.

Filtering Out Colors

Avoid Interlacing Background Images
Graphic applications commonly save GIF files with more colors than needed. Commonly, GIF files will use the maximum number of graphics allowable (256 colors) and these excess colors get saved throughout your GIF files. By simply editing your image preferences to reduce the number of colors used from 256 down to the bare minimums (usually multiples of 16 are acceptable, such as 16, 32 or 64 colors), web designers can usually cut out anywhere between 15-60% of the image file size. When these savings are tallied up for each image used, the bandwidth savings can become quite large.

In addition to color reduction, the actual palette size is reduced. For example, a 256 color image consists of an 8-bit palette. Being able to reduce the palette from 8 to 6 bits will cut the number of colors from 256 down to 64 and strip up to 25% of the file size. As a general rule to remember, the less colors used, the smaller file size can be accomplished. Below, we show a table of the palette bit number in comparison with the maximum number of colors allowed for the associated palette. We recommend changing your color depths with one of the suggestions given below to max out each palette you use.

Bit Depth

Number of Colors

2

3

5

8

256
(JPEG Minimum)

24

16.8 Million
(JPEG Only)

This color reduction technique however will not work with JPEG’s since JPEG’s use the full color spectrum for each image. As a result, only use JPEG’s for high resolution images (over 256 colors) and GIF’s for lower definition images.

Image Compression

Although each graphics application varies in the setup preferences, there exists many compression options that web designers can take advantage of in order to strip down file size. The easiest example is to strip away any comments embedded in GIF files. Additional options such as image quality to file size ratios can also be manipulated in order to determine the best mix between quality and quantity for each image. The best suggestion we can make here is to read up on your graphics application compression options because each application varies and there is no standard. Compression options are usually globally defined from a preferences menu or general customizations menu.

GIF vs. JPEG Comparison

Many webmasters struggle to decide whether to select GIF’s or JPEG’s for their images. Below, we present to you a comparison between GIF’s and JPEG’s and make recommendations of which file format to use under different circumstances.

Many web designers choose to use images to depict words and phrases. However, oftentimes simply using font manipulation with special effects is often enough to deliver the same impact as using a graphic but using significantly fewer resources. This font tip works on almost all Windows machines, but may not work with some Macintosh/Unix machines. If compatibility across all platforms is an issue, you may not wish to implement this tip.

Sample Fonts

Font Name

Code Required

Arial

<font face=”arial” size=4>Arial</font>

Verdana

<font face=”verdana” size=4>Verdana</font>

Garamond

<font face=”garamond” size=4>Garamond</font>

Helvetica

<font face=”helvetica” size=4>Helvetica</font>

Futura

<font face=”futura” size=4>Futura</font>

There are dozens of standard fonts that are distributed with every PC that can be used. The above fonts are the standard True Type Fonts that are used dominantly on the web, but essentially any font can be used that is installed on a client’s computer.

Syntax: <font face=”FONT NAME” size=4>Insert your text here</font>
Font Name: The True Type Font to use (ie: Arial)
Font Size: The Size of the text between -6 and +6

Combining Fonts: When one font may not be available to use, you can specify combinations such that if the first font is not available, the next font will be used and so on. Below is an example which will attempt to use Verdana, then Arial, then Helvetica. If none of these fonts is available, the standard browser font will be used.
Sample: <font name=”Verdana,Arial,Helvetica” size=2>Sample</font>

Important Note: It is important to ensure you use a font that your users have installed on their computer. For this reason, we suggest using True Type Fonts that have become standard on multiple platforms (not applicable for Macintosh/Unix computers).

Special Effects

Using fonts not only eliminates the need for using an image, but also permits the ability to perform special effects with great ease. Web designers can easily add underlining, bold, italics, strikethrough and different colors in a flash. The special effects table below demonstrates the frequently used special effects:

One of the most common tricks to shortening wait time is to change the order in which content loads. Instead of slashing out file size or bandwidth, many web designers can use additional HTML code to pre-define sizes of images and tables and cut out valuable wait time. Below, we present the most commonly used tips and suggestions that you can use to shorten the wait time for content to load.

Essentially, there are two areas where load time can be cut: Images and table layout. We deal with each of these areas below:
Speeding up Images

    Defining Image Sizes
Because a browser cannot tell in advance what dimensions an image should be, web designers should indicate in the HTML the dimensions to use. This will allow a blank space to be allocated for the image while continuing to load the remainder of the page rather than waiting for the entire image to load. This technique is done by using the “width” and “height” tags in conjunction with the Image tag as shown below:

Width = The horizontal width of the image in pixels
Height = The vertical width of the image in pixels

    Using Interlaced GIF’s
Interlaced GIF files have the advantage that they can begin to display even as they download. This helps give the effect that a web page is loading faster because it takes a shorter time to view. Despite this impression, the effect is actually opposite, most interlaced GIF files are about 10-15% larger than non-interlaced GIF’s. To create interlaced gif’s, check your graphic software options, most applications have an option to check off to enable your images to be interlaced.

Speeding up Tables

    Creating Many Small Tables
Tables can be used to easily align and position elements on a web page, however, they cannot display any content embedded within the table until the close table tag is found. This means that each cell, each row, each sub-table cannot be viewed until the

tag has been found. This being the case, a lot of web designers may find it convenient to separate each row in a table into a separate table.

For example, let’s assume a web page we are viewing has a large table that consists of 5 rows, each having 2 cells. Rather than having one large table, webmasters can cut valuable load time by slicing the table into five independent tables, each having one row (which consists of 2 cells each). This way, each table can load and be displayed rather than forcing users to wait until the entire page to load.

    Sample Code Before Changes:

Cell 1, Row 1

Cell 2, Row 1

Cell 1, Row 2

Cell 2, Row 2

Cell 1, Row 3

Cell 2, Row 3

Cell 1, Row 4

Cell 2, Row 4

Cell 1, Row 5

Cell 2, Row 5

    Sample Code After Changes:

Cell 1, Row 1

Cell 2, Row 1

Cell 1, Row 1

Cell 2, Row 1

Cell 1, Row 1

Cell 2, Row 1

Cell 1, Row 1

Cell 2, Row 1

Cell 1, Row 1

Cell 2, Row 1

    Comments:
Notice that the HTML code changes very slightly such that there is only one row per table. This allows for speedier load time and offers code simplification as well.

Background images were first introduced into Netscape and Microsoft browsers since version 3.x and have since been widely adopted by many webmasters as part of their site design. However, many web designers are not utilizing the fact that backgrounds “wrap” in the background of web pages. These techniques can help shave your file size down by several fold.

Experiment With Smaller Dimensions
Because browsers tile background images, it is possible to create very small (ex: 1600 width x 2 height) background images to span across the entire web page. This technique will put the burden of composition on the browser as opposed to excess bandwidth.

Avoid Interlacing Background Images
Because interlaced GIF files use additional bandwidth in order to start delivering graphics as they load, you can easily cut out a couple hundred bytes per image loaded if you use non-interlaced GIF’s. Check with your graphics software documentation on how to set this option.

Maximize Compression
Because most background images use small image dimensions, compressing backgrounds can usually save an extra 20-30% while keeping quality and detail quite modest. Most software packages have the option on deciding whether you want to save higher quality images or lower file size. Try experimenting with these options in your graphics software until you find the setting which produces small enough files without sacrificing image quality.

Substituting Graphics With Tables
Alternatively, web designers who use solid colors as a background image may be able to get around using images entirely by using either the BGCOLOR tag (embedded into the BODY, TABLE, TR or TD tag) or by using a combination of tables to simulate the effect.

Sample Usage BACKGROUND Image Usage
Syntax: <BODY BACKGROUND=”/images/background.gif”>

BGCOLOR Usage
Syntax: <BODY BGCOLOR=”#CCCCCC”>
Syntax: <TABLE BGCOLOR=”#CCCCCC”>
Syntax: <TR BGCOLOR=”#CCCCCC”>
Syntax: <TD BGCOLOR=”#CCCCCC”>
